“I don’t have anything big in the sign of Pisces, this newsletter isn’t for me.”

Think again!

We all have Pisces in our charts, which means we all have the sign of Pisces expressed somewhere in our lives.

Where we fall in the Pisces spectrum is individual for each of us, of course.

In this newsletter we are going to:

  • Find Pisces in your chart and see what it is influencing
  • Learn how to get the best from your Pisces
  • Think about how to avoid Pisces’ pitfalls

Who is Pisces?

Each sign of the Zodiac, including Pisces, describes a specific character, style, and set of tools.

If I had to boil Pisces’ style down into one word, it would be surrendering.

Pisces is surrendering.

Its archetype is the Enlightened One, the Psychic, the Mystic, and the Dreamer.

Also, the Perpetual Victim, Addict, and Drifter.

Like every sign, it’s complicated.

In Greek mythology, the goddess Aphrodite and her son, Eros, turned into fish and tied themselves together to escape from a monster.

That story is reflected in the astrological glyph for Pisces, ♓︎, the two fish.

Here are the components that make Pisces the sign we all know and love:

Ruled by Neptune: the planet of spiritual connection

Water Element: highly sensitive and runs on emotion

Mutable Modality: adapts easily to change

–Negative Polarity: looks inward

What is vital to know about Pisces?

The key to understanding Zodiac signs is knowing what the sign desires most.

Pisces wants to dissolve into the Oneness.

It wants to merge and blend with Spirit.

Pisces is the point where the ego retreats in exchange for a more collective identity - one with the Universe.

But how?

Ways that Pisces can achieve its goal of dissolving into Oneness:

  • having an ego that allows suppression
  • allowing all of the feelings in from every direction
  • taking care of others as though it is taking care of itself
  • not hyper-focusing on earthly achievement or status
  • allowing its mind to wander where it feels called to go

So Pisces wants to surrender itself - connect completely with the Divine.

And like every sign, Pisces comes with a set of tools to help it achieve its goals.

Pisces’ tools:

  • endless compassion
  • gentleness
  • enlightened
  • creative and imaginative
  • emotional fluency
  • nurturing
  • selflessness
  • flexibility
  • unmatched empathy
  • intuition

These are the skills in Pisces’ toolbox.

And using these skills helps to shape the Pisces personality.

The byproducts of Pisces using those tools shine through as traits - Pisces’ style:

  • Gives endlessly of themselves to anyone it thinks needs it
  • Very laid back and goes with the flow
  • Default is to trust others and look for the good in them
  • Boundaries, and the sense of “yours vs. mine” are blurred
  • Runs on instinct, inspiration, and feelings rather than logic and reasoning
  • Social chameleon that blends and merges with the personality of those it's with
  • Mind drifts between this world and whatever lies beyond
  • Being able to “tune in” to, or absorb, the feelings of those in their presence
  • Feelings are big and felt outwardly
  • Keeps earthly matters in perspective, knowing there is a bigger plan at play

But what does this look like when taken too far?

Every Zodiac sign has a spectrum.

One end is the healthiest possible expression of the sign – the other is the shadow where traits turn into unhealthy behaviors.

Pisces has some potential pitfalls:

  • struggles with focus and motivation
  • very sensitive
  • no boundaries
  • escapist behaviors
  • spaced out
  • giving too much of self
  • fanciful to an unrealistic degree
  • losing its identity completely
  • being taken advantage of

All signs have weaknesses.

It’s easier to understand them (and give them grace) when you can connect the dots to see why they may emerge.

Pisces is reaching for enlightenment.

It has to let go of its attachments in this world - surrender.

Pisces can “peek behind the curtain,” sense what others may not.

And none of that is easy.

Sensing so much can be overwhelming and confusing.

Pisces needs to learn to open itself up to spiritual oneness while also not giving too much of itself away in the wrong direction - a tough balance to strike.

Disclaimer

You may be wondering why I am referring to Pisces as an “it” instead of a “they.”

This is because I am not describing a person.

No one is this person.

What I am describing is a pure archetype – a character that exists in mythology and astrology.

Even the most Piscean of Pisces is a complex combination of many archetypes.

It’s important to remember this because in astrology we can fall into the trap of categorization – labeling and seeing people as one Zodiac sign.

We can even do this to ourselves.

But, signs aren’t humans, and when we try to fit someone into that small of a box it is doing them a disservice.

Disclaimer Over

So everyone has at least a hint of Pisces somewhere in their psyche.

The question is where and how much?

Where Pisces is in your life

Investigating Pisces in your chart offers helpful information like:

  • Where in life you are in-tuned to the Spirit
  • Giving you a heads-up on where Pisces’ pitfalls could occur
  • Places where you may find great empathy and compassion
  • Areas where you may be incredibly intuitive and inspired

How strong is your Pisces?

The first question is, how strong is Pisces in your chart?

Please remember that astrology is complex and this list is a blunt tool for determining “sign strength,” but it’s a good start.

  • Your Sun, Moon, or 1st House (your rising sign) in Pisces: Any of these would make your chart scream “strong Pisces.” Find more than one of those in this sign and you’re overflowing.
  • Other planets in Pisces (especially Neptune): Where there are planets there is energy working through the style of this sign. Some part of your psyche is shaped by Pisces. Find multiple planets there and this ups the ante for Pisces strength in your chart.
  • No planets are present, but houses 4, 7, or 10 land in Pisces: These angular houses can be very influential. Pisces’ influence can still be evident even though no planets sit in the sign.
  • No planets present and any house besides 1, 4, 7, or 10 lands in Pisces: The sign a house cusp (boundary line) lands in helps to shape it. With Pisces on a house cusp, “Pisces energy” may be present or felt in those areas of life. But without a planet there, its influence may be less profound.
  • Pisces lands between two houses and no house cusps land in it at all: This is an “intercepted sign.” “Pisces style” may not be strongly felt, or be expressed much more internally than externally.

Now you have a better sense of where you fall on the “Pisces scale.”

From here, it begins to feel like a “choose your own adventure.”

There are more details to add to your Pisces story, and each person’s will be different.

What is my Pisces story?

This is where things are going to take a different turn for each of us.

What you investigate next will depend on what you have going on in your sign of Pisces.

  • If you have a planet in Pisces: Planets have their own agendas to add to the mix. Investigate how your planet could be shaped by the sign of Pisces. For help on that question, find more information here.
  • For everyone, learn about the house that sits in Pisces. How does this watery sign shape the experiences you may have with that house? Learn more about that here.
  • If you have a planet in Pisces: How could the motivations of that planet work through that house, AND the style of Pisces? Get creative here! It takes some brainstorming and the use of your imagination.
  • If your Sun is in Pisces: Some with their Sun in Pisces may feel as though they identify more with their rising sign than with the sign of Pisces. Pisces is so adaptable that “the mask” of the rising sign can become their default mode. And the Sun as the ego or core of identity - the very thing that Pisces is working to dissolve - may not seem to shine through. It’s there! It may just need to be fed and watered!

Once you have gathered information about what in your chart (and life) Pisces is shaping, you are ready to do some introspection!

What can I learn from my Fish?

One great way to think deeper about something is through journal prompts.

The ones below can help you dissect the Pisces in your life and learn more about how you may experience this sign.

  • How “strong” is Pisces in my chart? Did this surprise me or not?
  • What house lands in Pisces in my chart?
  • Which areas of life does Pisces influence in my chart? (Learn more about houses here.)
  • Do I feel Pisces’ influence at work in those areas of my life in any way? If so, how?
  • Are there any of Pisces’ traits that shine through me in those parts of my life?
  • Do I sense any of Pisces’ pitfalls at play in those areas of life?
  • Are there any areas of life where I feel I have strong intuition? If so, what does it feel like?
  • How would I describe my relationship with the higher power? How connected do I feel?
  • Do I have a very strong sense of self or do I easily blend with those around me?
  • Have I ever felt what someone else was feeling without them telling me? What were the circumstances?
  • What are the ways that I quietly connect with the Spirit? Which practices or experiences make me feel the most connected?

How do I keep Pisces happy?

You have swam through deep Piscean waters at this point and investigated how you experience this energy.

If you want to develop and embrace your Pisces further, how could you begin?

Ideas to keep your Pisces happy:

  • Meditate. Meditation is good for everyone, but for Pisces it is a must. Find time to sit quietly and listen.
  • Find a worthy cause. Pisces is overflowing with compassion. Researching a worthy cause where your energy can be used in the service of others may shine Pisces’ light a little brighter.
  • Escape in a healthy way. With so much sensitivity, Pisces needs to check out once in awhile. Daydreaming, looking at the clouds, dancing, whatever pulls you out of your mind in a healthy way helps Pisces decompress.
  • Surrender to creativity. What is a fun and creative activity you enjoy? Go at it with abandon, not overthinking things. Just let the inspiration flow through you.

How do I avoid Pisces’ pitfalls?

Pisces is a fantastic sign that creates a sense of oneness in the world.

But if you have strong Pisces placements in your chart, how do you steer clear of some of Pisces’ not-so-fun tendencies?

Ideas to avoid Pisces’ pitfalls:

  • Don’t lose yourself entirely. Pisces can have a hard time sensing its own identity. This is where meditative practices and listening to the inner voice is vital for Pisces.
  • Check in with yourself about how you escape. Addictions like too much screen-time and over consumption of, pretty much anything, can sneak up on a person. Make sure what you are using to “numb out” your Pisces is healthy, like walks in nature or meditation.
  • Trust others but keep your eyes open. Pisces’ compassion and selflessness can be a magnet for those in need. That can definitely be a good thing, but sometimes others want to take more than Pisces has to give. Set limits on time, energy, and giving if it begins to feel draining.
