“I don’t have anything big in Scorpio, this newsletter isn’t for me.”

Think again!

We all have Scorpio in our charts, which means we all have Scorpio expressed somewhere in our lives.

Where we fall in the Scorpio spectrum is individual for each of us, of course.

In this newsletter we are going to:

  • Find Scorpio in your chart and see what it is influencing
  • Learn how to get the best from your Scorpio
  • Think about how to avoid Scorpio’s pitfalls

Who is Scorpio

Each sign of the Zodiac, including Scorpio, describes a specific character, style, and set of tools.

If I had to boil Scorpio’s style down into one word, it would be depth.

Scorpio is depth.

Its archetype is the Sorcerer, Detective, Psychoanalyst, and Hypnotist.

Also, the Vindictive, Power-Hungry Deviant.

Like every sign, it’s complicated.

In Greek mythology, the constellation Scorpius represents the scorpion that took down the great Orion.

It lends its name to the zodiac sign, Scorpio.

Scorpio’s symbol ♏︎ has a scorpion’s tail, ready to strike.

Here are the components that make Scorpio the sign we all know and love:

Ruled by Pluto: the planet of death and rebirth

Water Element: highly sensitive and runs on emotion

Fixed Modality: steady and persistent

–Negative Polarity: looks inward

What is vital to know about Scorpio?

The key to understanding Zodiac signs is knowing what the sign desires most.

Scorpio wants to know what’s hidden.

This sign wants to peer under the surface and see what lies beneath.

It wants to get to the real, raw truth of the matter - even hush-hush things other people only whisper about.

Through this unearthing of truth, Scorpio wants to experience ALL of the feelings.

Be a collector of emotions.

But how?

Ways that Scorpio can achieve its goal of pulling out what is hidden:

  • Asking penetrating questions - not just small talk but deep conversation
  • Exposing itself to topics that others may see as taboo or unpleasant
  • Forming very intimate bonds with partners
  • Watching others for signs that they are keeping a secret

So Scorpio wants to dig out and experience the truth.

And like every sign, Scorpio comes with a set of tools to help it achieve its goals.

Scorpio’s tools:

  • Persistence to stay on the hunt until the truth is found
  • Courage to face the harsh realities of life
  • A great “BS” detector that can sense when things don’t add up
  • An incredible spectrum of feelings - emotional fluency
  • Detachment from the pressure to “keep things pleasant”
  • Unwavering intensity
  • Understanding what makes people tick

“That is the Scorpion’s endpoint… To let nothing be hidden behind walls of fear. To make the unconscious conscious.”

— Steven Forrest

These are the skills in Scorpio’s toolbox.

And using these skills helps to shape the Scorpio personality.

The byproducts of Scorpio using those tools shine through as traits - Scorpio’s style:

  • Realness and a desire for realness in others
  • The kind of power that comes with not getting scared easily
  • An ability to handle deep, dark emotions and topics
  • A desire for complete vulnerability from partners when friends and partners drop their walls and submit their entire selves
  • Passionate and intense relationships
  • Compassion that comes from having such a depth of emotion
  • Natural suspicion or cynicism about people because this sign is always on the lookout for what is hidden
  • Magnetic, even mystical charisma, “seeing” into people
  • Curiosity about the uglier, taboo, or otherwise “unpleasant” parts of life

But what does this look like when taken too far?

Every Zodiac sign has a spectrum.

One end is the healthiest possible expression of the sign – the other is the shadow where traits turn into unhealthy behaviors.

Scorpio has some potential pitfalls:

  • A fear of opening up and being vulnerable with others
  • Consumed with cynicism or dark, depressing topics
  • Struggling to trust, being too suspicious of everyone and their motives
  • Brooding or bitter in times where one is expected to "be pleasant"
  • Because it understands how people tick, using someone's deepest motivations or fears to wield power over them
  • Possessive or controlling
  • Power trips and stubborn streaks

All signs have weaknesses.

It’s easier to understand them (and give them grace) when you can connect the dots to see why they may emerge.

Disclaimer

You may be wondering why I am referring to Scorpio as an “it” instead of a “they.”

This is because I am not describing a person.

No one is this person.

What I am describing is a pure archetype – a character that exists in mythology and astrology.

Even the most Scorpio of Scorpios is a complex combination of many archetypes.

It’s important to remember this because in astrology we can fall into the trap of categorization – labeling and seeing people as one Zodiac sign.

We can even do this to ourselves.

But, signs aren’t humans, and when we try to fit someone into that small of a box it is doing them a disservice.

Disclaimer Over

So everyone has at least a hint of Scorpio somewhere in their psyche.

The question is where and how much?

Where Scorpio is in your life

Investigating Scorpio in your chart offers helpful information like:

  • Where in life you prefer raw honesty
  • Areas where you are more comfortable going deep into things
  • Places where you may experience transformation
  • Giving you a heads-up on where Scorpio pitfalls could occur

How strong is your Scorpio?

The first question is, how strong is Scorpio in your chart?

Please remember that astrology is complex and this list is a blunt tool for determining “sign strength,” but it’s a good start.

  • Your Sun, Moon, or 1st House (your rising sign) in Scorpio: Any of these would make your chart scream “strong Scorpio.” Find more than one of those in this sign and you’re overflowing.
  • Other planets in Scorpio: Where there are planets there is energy working through the style of this sign. Some part of your psyche is shaped by Scorpio. Find multiple planets there and this ups the ante for Scorpio strength in your chart.
  • No planets are present, but houses 4, 7, or 10 land in Scorpio: These angular houses can be very influential. Scorpio’s influence can still be evident even though no planets sit in the sign.
  • No planets present and any house besides 1, 4, 7, or 10 lands in Scorpio: The sign a house cusp (boundary line) lands in helps to shape it. With Scorpio on a house cusp, “Scorpio energy” may be present or felt in those areas of life. But without a planet there, its influence may be less profound.
  • Scorpio lands between two houses and no house cusps land in it at all: This is an “intercepted sign.” “Scorpio style” may not be strongly felt, or be expressed much more internally than externally.

Now you have a better sense of where you fall on the “Scorpio scale.”

From here, it begins to feel like a “choose your own adventure.”

There are more details to add to the Scorpio’s story, and each person’s will be different.

“Scorpio is a dramatic sign, one that loves emotion even while it appears pained by its own experiences. It is better for Scorpio to feel bad than to feel nothing.”

— Robert Hand

What is your Scorpio story?

This is where things are going to take a different turn for each of us.

What you investigate next will depend on what you have going on in your sign of Scorpio.

  • If you have a planet in Scorpio: Planets have their own agendas to add to the mix. Investigate how your planet could be shaped by the sign of Scorpio. For help on that question, find more information here.
  • For everyone, learn about the house that sits in Scorpio. How does this watery sign shape the experiences you may have with that house? Learn more about that here. (Enjoy my terrible green screen - hahaha!!)
  • If you have a planet in Scorpio, how could the motivations of that planet work through that house, AND the style of Scorpio? Get creative here! It takes some brainstorming and the use of your imagination.

Once you have gathered information about what in your chart (and life) Scorpio is shaping, you are ready to do some introspection!

What can I learn from my Scorpio?

One great way to think deeper about something is through journal prompts.

The ones below can help you dissect the Scorpio in your life and learn more about how you may experience this sign.

  • How “strong” is Scorpio in my chart? Did this surprise me or not?
  • What house lands in Scorpio in my chart?
  • Which areas of life does Scorpio influence in my chart? Learn more here
  • Do I feel Scorpio’s influence at work in those areas of my life in any way? If so, how?
  • Are there any of Scorpio’s strengths that shine through me in those parts of my life?
  • Do I sense any of Scorpio’s pitfalls at play in those areas of life?
  • When in life have you been brave enough to face an ugly truth?
  • Has there been a time that you knew someone was struggling with something before they even told you? How did you know?
  • When have you helped someone through something difficult just by listening? How did that experience make you feel?
  • Would you consider yourself to be good at “reading” people? Or, have people surprised you when you find out who they “really are?” What signs did you read or what signs did you miss?
  • How would you rate how “real” you like to keep things? Are there areas in your life where you like to keep things more "pleasant" and light than others? Are there any areas where you prefer things to be more raw and completely honest, regardless of what people think?

How do I keep Scorpio happy?

You have swam through deep Scorpio waters at this point and investigated how you experience this energy.

If you want to develop and embrace your Scorpio further, how could you begin?

Ideas to keep your Scorpio happy:

  • Don’t be afraid to get deep with people. There may be someone in your life who could benefit from the healing that can come from deep, open conversations.
  • Give yourself permission to feel. Sit with your feelings, be curious about them, observe them.
  • Think about any burdens you feel about having to “put on airs” in certain places in your life. Would being more authentic in that area be a relief?
  • Get curious and find a mystery to investigate. This could be through a novel, true crime, a documentary, or something real that you would like to research.

“Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood.”

— Marie Curie

How do I avoid Scorpio’s pitfalls?

Scorpio is a fantastic sign that ushers in truth and healing.

But if you have strong Scorpio placements in your chart, how do you steer clear of some of Scorpio’s not-so-fun tendencies?

Ideas to avoid Scorpio’s pitfalls:

  • Seek out something light and fun: Scorpio goes dark naturally, so purposefully seeking out a good time can bring good balance.
  • Think about your boundaries: Healthy boundaries are very important. Check in with your walls, are they too thin (letting too much in), too thick (not letting enough in, could be Scorpio), or are they just right?
  • Check your motives when it comes to honesty: Being honest with people is virtuous, but sometimes it can hurt. Before sharing a truth with someone, make sure it’s constructive and not something vindictive disguised as “brutal honesty.”
  • Watch your grip on others: Focus on maintaining a healthy attachment to a partner.
